Obituary

Kathy Lynn Grdenich Arbuthnot Fleming
Shippingport, formerly of Vanport

Kathy Lynn Grdenich Arbuthnot Fleming, 67, of Shippingport PA, died unexpectedly in her home on May 11, 2021.

Kathy was born on February 4, 1954 in New Brighton, grew up in Vanport, and graduated from Beaver High School, Class of 1972. She was a Registered Nurse and Phlebotomist working at Aliquippa Hospital, the Medical Center of Beaver, and in Home Health Care and also the Site Nurse on many jobs at the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station and Bruce Mansfield. Kathy had the opportunity to meet many of Beaver County’s professionals by performing life insurance exams. She was the owner of Fleming Mobile Home Park in Hookstown, PA and enjoyed learning how to operate heavy equipment, hauling slag, and plowing snow and did her very best to maintain the property. Kathy also provided loving end of life care to her mother Harriet and husband Dave.

One of her passions was assisting others with researching genealogy and locating their family members. One of her greatest accomplishments was locating her father’s brother, Frank Grdenich, who lost his life while serving as a pilot in WWII. His location was unknown for almost 6 decades. Through countless hours of research and requests for military records she eventually traced his last known flight path to Aubusson, France. He had crashed in a farmer’s field and had been buried as Unknown. In 2001. She made contact with two French WWII researchers, who were familiar with the crash site, and in May of 2001 she and her father Joseph were invited to France by the Mayor of Aubusson for a parade, ceremony, and to commemorate a large stone monument that was erected in the center of the town honoring her uncle. This was also featured in the Beaver County Times in which 27 Beaver area veterans were honored with a refurbished WWII memorial in Beaver's Irvine Park. The journey of Kathy’s research and the historic outcome also became the subject for a documentary titled “The Last Honor”.

Kathy also enjoyed writing poems, several of which were published. One was entitled “Your Fallen Comrades” in the Heritage Herald, a Periodical of the Heritage League of the Second Air Division (USAAF) Issue #61 May 2017 in honor of her uncle and his squadron.

She made a big impact on everyone who had the honor of knowing her.

Kathy is survived by her sisters Barbara Snyder and Carol Carpenter, and brother Joseph Grdenich. Her daughters Rachelle Ulizzi and Haley (Mike) Brody, her son Ryan (Sarah) Fleming, and stepdaughters Stacey (Robert) Fuchs and Sondra (Matt) Golbitz. Her grandchildren Justin, Heather and Brandon Ulizzi, Elaina and Jonathan Fleming, Shane, Cole, and Erika Fuchs, and great-granddaughter Cali Constantinou.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H. David Fleming, her parents Harriet L. Grdenich, Joseph Grdenich, and biological father Theodore Arbuthnot, brother Neal Arbuthnot Sr, and nephew Dean Arbuthnot.
